Lemon Balm, also called ‘Melissa’ is one of the most powerful wild botanicals we use in our kapha skin care basics. The essential oil of Lemon Balm is a rare ingredient extracted from the leaves and flowers of Melissa officinalis, a member of the mint family that grows in South Central Europe, the Mediterranean, Iran and some regions of America.
The sweet, fresh and lemony scented oil is rich in antioxidants such as geraniol, nerol, cirtronellal,, etc., all of which provide a myriad of therapeutic skin benefits.
Melissa Essential Oil is an instant skin refresher. It’s also a very effective acne-controlling wild-gathered botanical. The antimicrobial active agents in Lemon Balm penetrate deep into the dermis to help detoxify the pores and prevent the overgrowth and spread of acne-causing bacteria. Rosmarinic acid and tannins in Melissa work as astringents to balance excessive oiliness and also helps tighten skin.
On the downside, high concentration of raw Lemon Balm Essential Oil can cause UV skin sensitization and should therefore be topically applied only in clinically recommended concentrations.
