Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is one of the most widely used herbs worldwide and is the single most used herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine today.  Licorice root extract is also used in natural Skin Care as a skin brightener, as it inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase needed to produce melanin (pigment), Improving hyperpigmentation is one of this plant’s best attributes. Hyperpigmentation occurs when your skin produces more melanin in certain patches or spots than in others, producing uneven tone and muddy complexion.

This also is due to free radical exposure since free radicals can damage melanin-forming skin cells, causing them to produce excess pigment. Licorice root inhibits this process by hindering both melanin and free radical production.
Licorice root also contains glycyrrhizin, a powerful antioxidant, and helps treat atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and psoriasis.
